on consignment in 1958
but remained in storage for
eight years because the city
could not afford the $35,ooo
price tag.

in 1964 Charles de Gaulle
secured funding for the statue
and gifted it to the city
and people of New Orleans
from the people of France.

in 1972 the statue was placed
on canal street .
gilded in 1985 and again in 1999
when it was relocated
( due to construction of Harrah's Casino )
to the present site near
the French Market.
