then and now ........ home town series 1

Memories,
Like the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
( lyrics by Bergman / music by Marvin Hamlisch 1973 )

 Wardlaw-Smith House
circa 1860
Greek Revival architecture
acquired in 1871 by the Smith family...
remaining occupied by descendants of
Chandler Holmes Smith until the 1960 's
...
locally referred to as the Smith Mansion..
passed by daily on my walk to and from school..
of course at that time I didn't have an interest in the
history of an old house needing restoration..

Historically the house was once used as
a hospital for Confederate soldiers in 1864
...
also served as a local  WPA
( Works Progress Administration )
relief agency during the Great Depression
...
in 1972 placed on the National Registry of Historic Places
...
in 1988  the property was purchased by
 North Florida Community College
( Madison, Florida )
renamed
the Wardlaw-Smith -Goza Conference Center
