13th street overpass and mural
( photo from 2011 )
the overpass was once a railroad bridge
spanning US 441 ( 13th street )..
after the railroad line closed, the overpass
became a bicycle - pedestrian path ..
part of the Depot Ave. Rail Trail
the battered fencing along the overpass
and the mural's degrading condition
contributed to the area being an eyesore
for SW Gainesville and the surrounding
UF and Shands facilities.
after months of planning and many
more months of construction...
the 'new' overpass re-opened in Nov. 2012
the mural is gone...
painted over
double helix
dubbed the double helix because
of its shape which is meant to mimic
a railroad track being twisted into
the molecular structure of DNA
homage to Gainesville's railroad past and
the present day bio-tech and medical prominence
of UF and Shands
