Florida Keys Memorial
( known locally as the Hurricane Memorial )
dedicated in 1937
built to honor the hundreds of World War I Veterans
and local citizens who perished in the
Labor Day 1935 Hurricane.
the 22 foot tiled ceramic crypt in front of the monument
depicts the Florida Keys with Matecumbe in the center..
site of the greatest destruction.
the crypt contains the cremated remains of 300
victims of the storm
