birds in the 'hood .... Nov 2013

male  Eastern  Bluebird
...
the birds have been on hiatus
 for  almost a month...
warm weather is a factor,
but also the daily appearance
 of those pesky Sandhill Cranes

male  Brown-headed Cowbird

Goldfinch

Palm Warbler

Sparrow

Titmouse

Sandhill  Crane
...
the pair in the backyard
have been stealing seed
 from the feeders..
keeping the smaller birds away
and even trying to catch the
squirrels that are brave enough to
 get close to the feeders

around gainesville ...... 2013

Mom's Kitchen
1008 NW 5th Avenue
 Gainesville, Florida
...
family owned and operated
from the  1940's
before closing in 2006
...
Gainesville's  first  SOUL FOOD  restaurant
..
purchased by the City of Gainesville
in 2009 for $165,000
( twice the estimated value of the property )
for the purpose of renovating and creating
a museum and helping revitalize the neighborhood
...
fast forward to 2013
and the City  Building Dept. has deemed the
building unsafe posing a fire hazard
and in danger of collapse
..
so the building remains shuttered and closed...
the elephant in the room

the forgotten ........... mural 1

Let A Book Be Your Imagination
mural @1995
located  in  Florida  Bookstore  parking  lot
...
blame it on  tunnel  vision..
have  driven past the murals
at least a dozen times in the past year..
and yet I never stopped
...
vaguely remember when they
 were being painted ..
eleven murals on the walls of  two  parking lots
...
so they remained forgotten..
overgrown by weeds on the wall
and
space in my head

Veteran's Day 2013

...
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
